Use of do-does-did-will-shall

ðŸ“˜ The Use of Do, Does, Did, Will, and Shall with the First Form of the Verb

1. Introduction

Today, we are going to learn how auxiliary verbs (do, does, did, will, shall) are used with the first form of the verb (also called the base form).
The first form of the verb is the simple base word: go, eat, play, write, read, etc.
For example:
go (not goes or went), eat (not ate), write(not wrote).

2. The Role of Auxiliaries

Auxiliary verbs help us in:

  • Making questions
  • Forming negatives
  • Adding emphasis &
  • Talking about the future

3. Use of Do

  • Present tense auxiliary used with I, you, we, & they.
  • Always followed by the first form of the verb.

✅ Examples:

  • I do eat breakfast daily. (emphasis)
  • I do not eat junk food. (negative)
  • Do you play cricket? (question)

4. Use of Does

  • Present tense auxiliary used with he, she, it, singular nouns.
  • Followed by the first form of the verb (never -s after does).

✅ Examples:

  • She does work hard.
  • He does not like coffee.
  • Does Ali study at this college?

5. Use of Did

  • Past tense auxiliary for all subjects.
  • Always followed by the first form, not the second form.

✅ Examples:

  • They did go to the park yesterday.
  • She did not eat lunch.
  • Did you meet your teacher?

6. Use of Will

  • Future auxiliary used with all subjects.
  • Always followed by the first form.

✅ Examples:

  • I will write a letter tomorrow.
  • We will not go to the market.
  • Will they come to the party?

7. Use of Shall

  • Traditionally used with I, we for the future.
  • In modern English, will is more common, but shall still shows promise, determination, or formality.

✅ Examples:

  • I shall help you with homework.
  • We shall not fail if we try.
  • Shall we begin the meeting?

8. Key Rules Summary

  • Do/Does → Present tense (questions/negatives/emphasis).
  • Did → Past tense (questions/negatives/emphasis).
  • Will → Future (all subjects).
  • Shall → Future (mainly I, we; more formal).
  • After these auxiliaries, always use the first form of the verb.

9. Practice Sentences

Change the following into questions and negatives:

  1. He goes to school. (present tense)
  2. They played football. (past tense
  3. I will visit Lahore. (future tense)
  4. We shall overcome difficulties.

Closing Note:
Using these auxiliaries correctly is the foundation of English Grammar.
