Gerund and Verbal Noun in English



Gerund or Verbal Noun

It is a  ~ing form of the verb that is used in Six Important Ways:

1. as a Noun (as a Subject)
Walking is a habit.

Smoking is injurious to health.

Writing is my passion.

Playing is essential for children's development.

2. As an object (as an Object of the Verb)

Majid has stopped smoking.

She loves writing stories.

Some of them stopped and stood watching that.

He enjoys playing football.

3. As of the Preposition 

Majid is accused of smoking.

They are engaged in planning.

He is good at writing with his left hand.

She's good at playing with children.

4. As a complement to the Verb 

His habit is smoking. 

Her talent is writing poetry.

His passion is playing the guitar.

5. Noun in Apposition

The bad habit, smoking, caused his death.

The art of writing, fiction, is her true calling.

The art of playing, piano, requires dedication.

6. As a Compound Noun

The smoking area is reserved

Writing desk (a desk designed for writing)

Playing field (a field used for playing sports)


Modal Verb (be + used to, get + used to,  & used to)

1. be + used to + Gerund

I am used to taking tea.

He was used to driving a lot those days. 

2. get + used to + Gerund

He gets used to studying books.

She got used to driving a lot those days.

3   used to + Gerund

I used to take tea.

He used to play football
