Use of would and could


Some sentences using "would" and "could":
Would:
1. I would like to travel to Europe someday. (expressing a desire or preference)
2. She would often stay up late to finish her work. (describing a habitual action in the past)
3. They would have arrived by now if they had left on time. (expressing a hypothetical or uncertain situation)
4. I would be happy to help you with your project. (expressing willingness or agreement)

Could:
1. She could speak three languages fluently. (describing ability or capacity)
2. It could rain tomorrow, so bring an umbrella. (expressing possibility or uncertainty)
3. I could hear the music coming from next door. (describing ability to perceive or experience something)
4. They could have won the game if they had practiced more. (expressing a hypothetical or uncertain situation)

Remember:
"Would" is often used for habits, preferences, or hypothetical situations.
"Could" is often used for abilities, possibilities, or uncertainties.

Choose the correct option of the following:

1. Ali said that he ____ the party the next day.





ANSWER= (C) would join
Explanation: Ali said that he would join the party next day.

2. What ___ you like to have ?





ANSWER= (B) would
Explanation: What would you like to have? ('would' is used in present tense to show respect.

3. I wish I ____ to London next year.





ANSWER= (B) would go
Explanation: I wish I would go to London next year. ('would' is used for a desire for future)

4. They   ____ soccer than play basketball.





ANSWER= (C) would rather play
Explanation: They would rather play soccer than play basketball. (as a choice with comparison

ANSWER= (C) would like
Explanation: Salma said that she would like to dance at the party.

ANSWER= (B) rings
Explanation: The dog will bark loudly whenever the doorbell rings. (Present Tense)

ANSWER= (D) was brought
Explanation: The boy was brought to the altar and the executioner was directed.

Explanation: The students are studying diligently for their upcoming exams.

ANSWER= (B) enjoy
Explanation: My sister and I enjoy going for long walks in the park.

ANSWER= (B) are
Explanation: There are no reasons to, none at all, now.

ANSWER= (D) have been singing
Explanation: She has been singing since early morning. Present perfect continuous tense.

ANSWER= (B) sets
Explanation: The sun sets beautifully over the horizon every evening in the velley. (Present Tense).

ANSWER= (B) is
Explanation: There is no need to change your appearance. ('Need', is a noun)

14. The children ___ happily in the playground after school.





ANSWER= (B) play
Explanation: The children play happily in the playground after school.

ANSWER= (D) are always present
Explanation: Ali is one of those students who are always present in the class.

ANSWER= (A) displays
Explanation: The computer displays the error message on the screen.

ANSWER= (B) need not
Explanation: He need not go there. (the semi-modal verb is used with a bare infinitive, just like can go, could go etc. She need study hard. not she needs to study hard.)

18. My sister along with her friends ____ going for long walks in the park.





ANSWER= (B) enjoys
Explanation: My sister along with her fiends enjoys going for long walks in the park.

ANSWER= (A) buy
